Silicone therapy for treating scars

Silicone therapy is an effective method of treating scars. It is the only scar treatment with scientific evidence. Silicone products are available as silicone sheets and silicone gel.

  • Reduces itching and pain

  • Scar becomes more flexible, flatter and less red

  • Scar formation is minimized

What is silicone therapy?

Simply put, silicone sheets or gel provide a cover for the fragile scarred skin. This reduces moisture loss. As a result, the scar settles earlier and recovers faster. The following applies for the scar treatment: starting early prevents (abnormal) scar formation!

The result

The use of silicone leads to fewer complaints (itching, redness, skin tension) and a less visible scar.

You will notice the effect on the complaints within a few days. Silicone therapy:

  • Relieves itching
  • Reduces pain

There will be visible results after 2 to 4 months:

  • Your scar will become flatter and less red
  • The skin becomes more supple (less skin tension)
  • Scarring is minimized

Scientifically proven

The scar-reducing effects of silicone are scientifically supported. Which is why the use of medical silicone sheets and gel has become the preferred therapy in professional scar treatment.

Experiences with Scarban

During a symposium for oncology nurses I have gathered more information about Scarban. Scarban can be used until long after the operation (sometimes even 2 years later).

Mika

After my surgery (amputation), I started using Scarban. My scar was very red and swollen and this is already much reduced. I can therefore highly recommend it.

Yvonne

After my amputation I got such an ugly, tight, red scar that the plastic surgeon had to open it again to get it right. The plastic surgeon gave me Scarban plasters and the scar is now fine!

Silicone sheets

Silicone sheets are used for the treatment and prevention of abnormal scars. The self-adhesive sheets, made from medical silicone, ensure that scars become smoother, more supple and thinner. They also reduced other scar complaints.

  • The sheet stays in place when you move, even in skin folds
  • The sheet feels soft and pleasant to the touch, thanks to the unique, stretch-fabric, outer layer
  • The sheets consist of 100% medical silicone, with very high UV protection

Silicone gel

Silicone gel is specially created to fade, reduce and prevent small scars. The gel is ideal for scars on the face and other visible locations. It is a transparent, self-drying gel made of medical silicone. The gel forms a thin layer on top of the skin, without penetrating the skin. So it is always in contact with the skin.

  • Silicone gel is transparent (non-visible)
  • Extremely suitable for small scars (e.g. surgical scars)
  • Quick-drying. Make-up may be applied on top of the gel
  • Easy to use

Application

Scarban products help treatment of the following scars:

  • Normal scars
Normal scars are not thickened and do not have a (bright) red colour. However, they can itch, be painful and/or ‘pull’.
  • Hypertrophic scars
Hypertrophic scars are thick and stiff, protrude above the skin and are bright red. They are often itchy and painful and result from, for example, accident, fire and operation wounds.
  • Keloid scars
Keloid scars become larger than the original wound. They proliferate and give rise to the same complaints as hypertrophic scars. Keloid scars also result from, among others, accident, fire and operation wounds.

Scar formation

It is impossible to predict whether and when your body will develop an abnormal scar. This depends on many factors. One of the most important factors is excessive moisture loss from the scar. That is why it is important to help your scarred skin to recover the moisture loss as well as possible.

A scar will not go away, but minimizing it is possible. How is that possible? By starting with Scarban silicone dressing as soon as possible after wound closure.
